John, who was 80, died after a short illness and is fondly remembered by a host of fellow cricket lovers.

One of them, Gordon McCullough said: “John was a Cumbrian cricket umpirefor30 years and a former Umpires secretary for the old Cumberland Senior League.

“In his younger days John played for Workington in the North Lancashire League and was part of the team in 1969 which won the League under the captaincy of Barry Parker.

“John was always the first to offer his services to umpire many of the Cumbria County age group matches for many years and will be greatly missed by Brenda, Ian, Andrew, Wendy and their families as well as all his friends in the cricket fraternity.”

All his working life John was employed by British Telecom
