npl logo.pngNo football will be played in the Northern Premier League today following the Government announcement on Wednesday regarding tier changes.

Four games – all in the North West Division – had been left standing, before the Northern Premier League confirmed the postponements.

Workington’s home game with Pontefract had gone two weeks ago when Pontefract pulled-out but Kendal Town should have been hosting Widnes and it was one of the four games to go today.

The big game was Clitheroe at home to new leaders Colne while the other two late postponements were - Marine v Prescot Cables and Runcorn Linnets v City of Liverpool.

The league says it is waiting for further clarity surrounding the new tier restrictions.

A League statement said: “An update will be provided to clubs next week after all of the relevant meetings have been held, including with the FA, Alliance Leagues, Trident Leagues and league management committee.”

If the current situation continues deep into February there is a serious danger that the League season could be voided for a second successive year.
