danny grainger thumbsup.pngWorkington Reds have backed the Non-League project which calls for teams in the pyramid system to be promoted using stats from the last two incomplete seasons.

That system of points per game would not be used to decide demoted club. Instead there would be no relegations and the FA would be invited to re-organise the various Step levels.

On those figures both Reds and Ramsbottom would be promoted to the NPL Premier Division from where they were relegated three and four years ago respectively.

There has been a mounting call across the Trident Leagues in particular – NPL, Southern League and Isthmian League – to support the project.

The clubs have until tomorrow to give their views to the FA and a decision is expected next week.

Today, however, National League North and National League South were suspended for two weeks amid discontent over funding.

There have been major concerns over loan offers to fund elite non-league sides and Covid-19 testing and several clubs had called for the season to be halted until these issues were addressed.

The National League board met earlier today and announced their decision after a review of feedback from clubs. Subsequently all of tomorrow’s scheduled fixtures have been postponed while scores of midweek matches either side of games on 30 January are also off.

Clubs were able to start the season through the help of £10m in grants from the government, but what’s on offer now to keep on playing, with no gate receipts or bar income, are government loans.

However, many have said they are worried about the financial implications of taking on loans to cover costs incurred by the coronavirus pandemic and competing behind closed doors.

Clubs met on Wednesday and were told they would either have to takeout loansor suspend the season.

Twelve National League North sides called for the league's "immediate suspension" in a joint statement on Thursday.

For the moment the National League is continuing.
