mist 009.JPG.jpgTHERE was a major disappointment for punters and trainers alike at the HTA’s October trails on Saturday when the first two races had to be shelved.

The seniors and maidens, which would have opened the meeting at Shap, were cancelled because of the problems in laying the trail in thick mist.

In the interests of safety the Carlisle and Penrith Area committee cancelled the two trails, although conditions did improve with a slight improvement in the visibility to allow the shorter trails to take place. Spectators didn’t see much of what went on at Shap because of the mist but the first two trails that were completed had easy winners.

Lone Rebel won by a big margin in the pups from Daisy Dream with Persian Sky heading a clutch of other ticketing finishers.

Jazz Band was equally convincing in the puppy maidens, finishing well clear of Persian Prince and Cracking On.

The open non-winners couldn’t have been a bigger contrast – a dead heat as Hunter’s Dal and the fast-finishing Superstition .were unable to be separated. They were closely followed-in by Miterdale Force.

The last trail was for the open restricted grade and Two Tone was a comfortable winner, as Chavanel just beat Cartier and Carrick in their separate battle for second.

There was also disappointment at Monday’s Westmorland Classic at Applethwaite Common when one of the six trails had to be declared void.

It was generally felt that the senior trail was far and away too long, and it was inevitable that the senior maidens would be over

Only five maidens went through past the trail field, and ten were out a very long time, some not being found until late evening.

The junior trails, too, were very long and there was a dispute about the winner of the pups, because the first one eluded its owner and went up the start again, and in the confusion a similar pup(Bracelet) was given first place. In the end Cracking On was awarded first but that is subject to confirmation.

There were close finishes in both the open non winners and open restricted. Eshdel Matilda just beat Eden Rocco in the first while Rooster came through fast on the run to the line to pip Overwater Bessy.

The veterans were very strung out behind Cinnabar who had Colleen and Tiagress in behind.

That very long opening senior trail had taken 42 and a half minutes to complete with Huntsman’s Jewel winning the marathon from Canny Girl and Jenny’s Rose.

The week had started with Tuesday’s meeting at Seaton where champion-elect Prudence was not among the tickets.
In her absence from the shake-up four of them got away and in a desperately close finish Try Again just beat Another Bay by a head
with Barton and Keystone close up in third and fourth.

Championship challenger and current leader Persian Bay couldn’t add to her tally in the puppy trail. She had fallen a long way behind before putting in a big finish but still only managed third place. Silver Charm beat Try Time and the fast-finishing Persian Bay.

There was a local winner in the open maidens where Barncroft Return kept going well to beat Flashdance by five yards with Silver Lining in third.

Wednesday’s meeting was at Low Place and in the opening senior trail Galemire Grace looked to be about to reward favourite backers only to be collared in the closing stages and she was beaten by Rooster by less than a length. Night Vision was a close third.

Daisy Dream was fancied to get right back into the puppy championship picture but she was beaten a length by Jenny’s Delight with Thorn Dancer back in third.

Midnight Show took the open non-winners from two of the Miterdales – Force and Princess while Littman was a good winner of the open restricted from Da Look and Quiet Linnet.

This Tuesday’s meeting was at Dearham where the champion elect Prudence was picked-up after shying-away from some cattle and refusing to budge.

As a result there was a grand battle for the major honours between Another Bay and Silver Spangle with the former eventually getting home by half a length.

There was compensation for the runners-up kennel though when Silver Charm produced a terrific leap over the last gutter to win nicely from puppy table leader Persian Bay. Delta Dawn, the winner’s kennelmate was back in third place.

There was a good finish to the open maidens which produced a one-two for the Napier’s kennel with Foxparke Yabadabadoo beating Foxparke Turbo by a head with the favourite Flash Dance close-up in third.
