sunderland error.pngOnly a handful of people live in the west Cumbrian hamlet of Sunderland.

So they were a trifle surprised to see themselves included in the latest lockdown broadcast from Sky News.

Boldly shown on the map to the west a lone dot on the map compared to the cluster in the east.

However, missing from that group in the north east was Sunderland, Tyne and Wear – and there’s quite a difference.

Cubria’s Sunderland is part of the All Saints ward of Allerdale Borough Council, roughly between Cockermouth near Aspatria, which has a total population of 4,803 according to the latest figures.

But that’s the ward size and really only a handful of people live in the hamlet itself.

By comparison the city of Sunderland in Tyne and Wear, has a population of 174,286.

Lots of people contacted the news organisation to point out the error, which it corrected.

It’s likely to be the first time that Cumbria’s Sunderland made Sky News – albeit in error.

My own memoriesof Sunderland are a bit hazey, but I think we passed it onour way to Tallentire to visit my mother’s cousin.

One house, in particular, stood out as it was garishly painted – green or blue as I recall, with drawings and according to my parents was the home of a gentleman called Slee – a character of the time.
