ronan michael.pngWhitehaven have announced the loan signing of Huddersfield’s 21-year-old prop forward Ronan Michael for a two-week rolling deal.

Michael was the first Irish-born player to play in the Super League in over a decade when he made his debut last year.

He has been playing rugby since 2017, and will be looking to secure a place in the Irish squad for this year’s Rugby League World Cup after initially taking to the game back at the Irish Under-17’s trials back in 2017.

Given the opportunity for som efirst team experience Michael said: “I’m really looking forward to my loan spell at Whitehaven and I’m grateful for the opportunity.

“The Championship this year is a very competitive one! I’m hoping to gain some game playing experience during the loan. Hopefully I can get out there soon with the boys and show what I’m about and learn along the way!”

Assistant Coach, Jonty Gorley said: “Ronan’s agent got in touch with us curious as to whether we needed a middle with Marc Shackley being out for another four to six weeks. We thought it made sense to bring someone in.

“We looked at some videos of Ronan and certainly liked what we saw. He’s a young up and coming athletic front rower.

“Ronan carries the ball very well which will serve us well. Defensively he looks brilliant, so it will be good to see him in the chocolate blue and gold.”

Whitehaven director, Ashely Kilpatrick added: “We are delighted to have Ronan join us. I’d like to thank Richard Thewlis, Ian Watson and the Huddersfield Giants for allowing Ronan to come to us, I’d also like to thank Ronan’s agent Graeme Taylor who made the deal between both parties happen swiftly and professionally.”

Whitehaven are looking forward to their home clash against Bradford Bulls at the newly-named  LEL Arena this Sunday at 3pm.Fans can watch the match via the OurLeague platform.
