The 23-year-old winger has come highly recommended by the club’s scouting contacts north of the border.

With the Whitehaven squad being light in the backline due to injuries suffered, and departures, the football committee looked at strengthening the team in this area.

Purewal was brought in on trial and has shown the coaching staff that he has potential and has agreed to stay at the Recreation Ground until the end of the season.

Director Ashley Kilpatrick has been pivotal in securing this signing, and he said: “Aaron has been here on a month’s trial and after speaking with Jonty and Charlo they are really excited by what they’ve seen in him.

“He is very quick and a natural athlete and although he may be new to rugby league, we feel as a club he has all the attributes to be a big hit in the sport and we’re delighted to have him until the end of the season."

Assistant coach Jonty Gorley said: ”Aaron is promising so it's fantastic to sign him for the season. It gives us a chance to see what he will be like in a league environment.

“His initial month’s trial was promising, he comes with good pedigree as a union winger, having played for Scotland through the age levels as well as playing a high standard of rugby union with GHA in Glasgow and Richmond in London.

“Aaron has settled in well and looks like he has already got some great rugby league attributes. He talks really well at training, has good balance and agility, and has pace to burn.

“We have given him a chance now at Whitehaven to hopefully fulfil his potential, which could help him make the Scotland squad for the RLWC 2021 later this year."

The club say they hope the fans will get behind Aaron as the squad look to push on from their positive start to the season.

After the opening win over Newcastle Thunder on Sunday they have a tough fixture this week-end at Featherstone.
