chris thorman 2.pngSix amateur players who have spent time on trial with Workington Town have now signed professional contracts.

The players, originally 16 of them, were invited to train with Town by head of development Gary Hewer and they have all worked hard to impress coach Chris Thorman (pictured).

It’s a win-win situation for Town. They have boosted their squad options and might have unearthed one or two gems.

And when the players concerned are not involved with the first team in League One can get game-time with their amateur clubs when they get back into action late next month.

The players who have joined the club on professional contracts are: Johnny Goulding,  Prop, Community Club - Cockermouth Titans; Adam Jackson, Half-back, Community Club - Barrow Island; Dominic Smallwood, Half-back, Community Club - Seaton Rangers; Zac Olstrom, Outside back, Community Club - Ellenborough Rangers; Lee Postlethwaite, Outside back, Community Club - Millom ARLFC; Jordan O'Leary, Back rower, Community Club - Seaton Rangers.

Head Coach Chris Thorman said of the new recruits - 'After having 16 local trialists take part in preseason training, I’m really pleased to announce that we have agreed terms with six of them to be part of our first team squad for 2021 and beyond.

“They have all enhanced the dynamic of the group; they’ve allowed us to have a lot more variety in our training methods and have all become very popular members of the group.

“Most of all it has allowed us to have much more competition for places, which is an absolute necessity as we strive for consistency in every game we are part of. Even though they’re all at different stages of their rugby league careers, they all deserve this opportunity and I look forward to working with them.”

Town start their 2021 campaign on Sunday with a tough looking game at Hunslet, who are expected to be among this season’s front-runners in League One.
